I honestly did not know what to expect. After hearing many great things about this book I was lucky to stumble across it in Oxfam. I knew then and there that I had to have it.

Paige Mahoney lives in 2059 Scion London working for a criminal organization unknown to the evil government Scion. Scion has one ultimate goal; to rid the world of ‘unnaturals’ or Clairvoyants. Our main protagonist Paige is a Clairvoyant, as are her colleagues. One day everything changes for Paige, she is kidnapped mysteriously, taken to Oxford, a city that has been a well-kept secret for nearly 200 years. Here she learns that a powerful race called the Rephaim are the reason for her, and many others, being kidnapped. Paige will be put to the test in ways she could never imagine.

I had just finished reading Three Dark Crowns and was feeling mega disappointed. I needed a book that was going to throw me into its world leaving me craving for more. By golly, this book did just this. one beginning this book I was very much in the world. Though Samantha did build the world as the story went along, from the first chapter I knew from reading that I had been thrown straight into the action. I really liked this, it made me feel apart of the world. That I was there, side by side with Paige, living in this frightening, dystopian London.

It took a while for me to get to grips with certain terms that the characters used (definitely didn’t realize there was a glossary at the back…) and at times I did struggle. I began to think that because I couldn’t understand what the characters were talking about made me further think that I was not going to enjoy the narrative. Ah, but I was wrong. So very wrong. The story kidnapped my interest and regardless of whether I felt a bit out of the loop, I soldiered on and began to catch on relatively quickly.

Paige Mahoney is a truly amazing character; beautifully written with so much fire and passion. She has an attitude that I love, forever voicing her opinions, though it may get her killed. She does not take shit, anyone’s for that matter. Her fight skills are killer and defending herself is like, no biggie. I admired her strength throughout the story. Her bravery was outstanding and her faith to not let the Rephaim destroy her.

This is a very fast paced book with a whopping amount of glorious action. I could not put this book down. It was definitely one of those books that made me want to jump straight back into it after I had finished work. I would think about it a lot when not reading it; I just had to know what happened next!!

I’m not going to go into all the other characters, as I would feel it would spoil it. Read it and bathe in this glorious world. I will be definitely getting my hands on ALL of the next books. I’m sold. I want to stay in this world for however long.

My rating 5/5
